Panthers Fall to Golden Panthers in Season Opener

FIU’s defense forced six turnovers, including three interceptions, as the Panthers fell to the Golden Panthers 38-17 in their season opener Saturday night at Riccardo Silva Stadium.

FIU held FIU to just 287 yards of total offense, but the Panthers were unable to take advantage of their opportunities, turning the ball over six times.

The Panthers got on the board first with a 25-yard field goal by kicker Chase Gabriel in the first quarter, but FIU answered back with a 7-yard touchdown run by running back Lexington Joseph.

Offense Struggles

The Panthers offense struggled to get anything going against the FIU defense, finishing with just 287 yards of total offense.

Quarterback Jake Garcia completed just 11 of 29 passes for 122 yards and three interceptions.

Running back Larry Brinson led the Panthers with 63 rushing yards on 13 carries.

Defense Forces Six Turnovers

The Panthers defense forced six turnovers, including three interceptions.

Linebacker Anthony Monroe had two interceptions, while safety Meiko Dotson had one.

The Panthers also forced two fumbles, which were recovered by defensive end Jeremiah Alexander and linebacker Jaylon Jones.

Special Teams Solid

The Panthers special teams were solid, led by kicker Chase Gabriel, who made all three of his field goal attempts.

Punter Jeffrey Weimer averaged 42.7 yards on three punts, and returner Shemar Stewart had 100 yards on four kickoff returns.
