Voyager 1: The Most Distant Human-Made Object

Subtle: Voyager 1's Journey into the Cosmos

Voyager 1, launched in 1977, has embarked on an extraordinary journey that has taken it to the farthest reaches of the solar system and beyond. As of today, Voyager 1 is approximately 15 billion miles (24 billion kilometers) from Earth, which is roughly 122 AU (Astronomical Units). An AU is the distance from the Earth to the Sun, approximately 93 million miles (150 million kilometers).

Voyager 1's Milestones

In 1998, Voyager 1 became the first human-made object to enter interstellar space, a region beyond the influence of the Sun's solar wind. In 2012, it crossed the heliopause, the boundary between the solar system and interstellar space. Voyager 1 continues to send back valuable data about the interstellar medium and the outer reaches of our solar system.

Voyager 1's Current Status

Today, Voyager 1 is traveling at a speed of approximately 38,000 miles per hour (61,000 kilometers per hour) relative to the Sun. It is powered by three radioisotope thermoelectric generators (RTGs), which provide electricity to its instruments. Despite its age, Voyager 1 remains in good health and is expected to continue operating until around 2025.
