New York Property Owners Face Fines for Violating Airbnb Law
City officials introduce new ordinances, targeting illegal short-term rentals
Owners of unregistered properties potentially face hefty fines
Effective Tuesday, the city of New York has implemented strict new regulations aimed at curbing the proliferation of illegal Airbnb and short-term rentals. These regulations mandate that property owners register their rentals with the city's Office of Special Enforcement (OSE), and those who fail to comply face substantial fines.
According to city legislators, the new law (Local Law 18) applies exclusively to properties rented out for periods of less than 30 days. The ordinance prohibits the rental of most homes and apartments via platforms like Airbnb for durations shorter than the stipulated timeframe.
The city has taken a hard stance against violators, with fines reaching up to $5,000 for repeat offenders. The aim of these measures is to protect the city's housing stock, address noise and safety concerns, and ensure fair competition in the tourism sector.
Property owners are urged to promptly register their properties with the OSE to avoid potential penalties. The city has emphasized that it is actively working to identify and penalize illegal rentals, and homeowners are advised to comply with the new regulations to prevent hefty fines.
